Tip of the Week:  Silence is Golden

Do not be afraid of silence; your participants need the time to consider and form their answer.  If the silence is tough for you to tolerate…consider counting to 10 in your head to give others the time to gather their thoughts and jump in to the conversation!

Great podcast! I felt like I was back in class. :)
I wanted to share one technique for dealing with silence. Much of my facilitation involves introverts. If I’ve asked a question and I’m not getting a response, or if I’ve tried asking it several ways and I’m still not getting a response, I ask them to turn to their neighbor and share. The volume in the room immediately jumps and it gives everyone a chance to answer without having to look foolish in front of everyone in the room (the introvert’s biggest fear). Then I can call on people as the volume drops and encourage them to share with the group.

Great tip Suzanne…for introverts AND for extroverts who want to “think out loud” before they share ideas with the entire group.
